“Ten years ago, in my small hometown in Switzerland, software engineering was just not something to consider as a field of study if you were a woman.

Since 14, Debora had been working in hotels in her free time. Going into hospitality management seemed like the most obvious solution to the pressure of choosing a career.

She graduated from Tourism and Hospitality Management in 2015 and worked in Hospitality and then Events Management. But she found she wanted to change something.

Tech was always an industry she had hoped to get into earlier in life.

She came to Makers Academy during a Demo Day and also for an Intro Cohort evening. She loved it: “Warm vibes, happy faces, internal jokes… everyone seemed to have a special connection with each other, which is what then happened to me with my cohort, after so much time spent together. You really feel the motto ‘once a Maker, always a Maker’ in the air.”

She ultimately chose Makers over other bootcamps and started on-site in January 2019. For her Final project, her group built a Pong game on Python and train an Artificial Intelligence that learns how to play it.

She is now a Full Stack Junior Software Developer currently working in Systems Design and Engineering at Deloitte UK.

Her advice for aspiring developers: “Take your time. I was really excited about my decision at first and I wanted all to happen in a week, but learning to code from complete zero takes a little longer than that. Focus on the ultimate goal and don’t give up.” She also suggests reading ‘Ruby for beginners’ by Ruby Monstas and ‘Learn to program’ by Chris Pine.
