Job Offer Guarantee Terms

Everybody deserves a job they love.

We’re confident that if you are accepted at Makers and put a genuine effort into studying and looking for a job, you will be successful. Our dedicated Careers Team will do everything in their power to support you into finding your first job as a software developer. By job, we mean a paid opportunity – no temp jobs or internships. 

In March 2020, Makers switched to fully remote delivery, enabling us to open up the course to students around the world. As part of this change we changed our job offer guarantee to a job offer support program as we realised it would be unfair to make any guarantees during this uncertain time. Everything about our career service has stayed the same since before this change – we continue to provide comprehensive and personalised career support to each and every one of our developers. The only aspect that’s changed is our ability to offer refunds.

WHAT IS A JOB OFFER?

If you put a genuine effort in studying and job-hunting (see next sections), we believe you will get an offer for a job that is:

  • expecting you to spend most of your time building software;
  • expecting you to work at least 25 hours a week;
  • permanent or, if fixed-term, of at least 6 months in duration;
  • Internships, short-term contracts, p/t contracts under 25 hours, jobs that don’t involve you spending most of your time writing code don’t count.

 

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO STUDY?

During the 12 week onsite course:

  • Attend Makers’ premises full time, unless agreed otherwise with a coach.

  • Take part in the projects and assignments of the course, including team projects.

  • Work towards the goals of the course as outlined by the coaching team.

  • Frequently seek feedback on your work in order to achieve a professional standard.

After the 12 week onsite course, before passing our course-completion assessment:

  • Work towards the goals of the course as outlined by the coaching team.

  • Work towards passing our course-completion assessment. This is designed to ensure you are ready to pass interviews and get a job.

  • Frequently seek feedback on your work in order to achieve a professional standard.

  • Keep in regular communication with the coaching team.

 

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO JOB HUNT?

  • Spend time job hunting on a daily basis — progressing applications with employers, crafting well-researched and thoughtfully written applications, looking for open roles, and building your network.

    If you take a break for the odd day here and there that won’t be a problem, but putting a genuine effort into looking for a job means spending nearly every day focusing on it.

  • Keep in regular communication with the careers team (updating us at least weekly, and replying to us within a couple of days).

  • We might recommend careers coaching for you if we anticipate you’ll encounter any obstacles. If we do, engage with the process and complete the tasks you agree with your coach each week.

  • Attend Makers Career Fairs, which are usually every 2 weeks.

  • Pursue roles both within and without the Makers Hiring Partner network.

  • Continue to practice your programming skills to keep yourself sharp.

  • Keep your Github CV up to date, so that we can refer to it;

The following is applicable only to students paying their deposit before 19th March 2020:

If you keep studying and looking for a job for 6 months after the end of the 12-week onsite course, and can’t get a great offer (see ‘What Is A Job Offer?’), we’ll refund what you paid us in full.

You’re expected to start job-hunting immediately after passing our course-completion assessment. If you need to take a short break after the course, or if you need to stop job-hunting for a while because external circumstances stop you (e.g. an illness), you’ll need an authorisation of our Careers team, which will not be unreasonably withheld.

In some cases, the Careers team may advise you to further work on some aspects of your skills instead of applying for jobs. In this case, not applying for jobs while you’re continuing learning following written advice of the Careers team, won’t invalidate this job offer guarantee.

You may choose to get a temporary job to support yourself during the job-hunting process. This is absolutely fine as long as it doesn’t prevent you from job-hunting, and is not a job that would qualify for the purposes of this job offer guarantee (see ‘What Is A Job Offer?’).

 

HOW ARE THE STUDYING AND JOB-HUNTING PROCESSES TRACKED?

You’ll need to maintain a weekly written record of your studying and job-hunting activities as detailed in the ‘What Does It Mean To Study?’ and ‘What Does It Mean To Job-Hunt?’ sections (e.g. goals working towards, feedback sought, jobs applied for, Careers Fair attendances, etc). This record will form the basis for the refund. If you forget and miss out some time, you can fill in the gaps retrospectively as long as we can reasonably verify the information.

You’ll need to share this document with the Coaching & Careers teams at the end of the 12 week course in order to qualify for the job offer guarantee.

 

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE JOB OFFER GUARANTEE?

Anyone who joined Makers after 22 Jan 2018, and paid their deposit before 19 March 2020, to get a job as a junior software developer, paid us the tuition fees, and successfully completed the 12 week onsite course, including building and presenting the final project. If you leave Makers before the end of the course, whether because you chose to do so yourself or we had to ask you to leave, you won’t qualify for the job offer guarantee.

Additionally, the following students don’t qualify for the job offer guarantee:

  • students who completed the course before 26 March 2018;
  • students who paid their deposit on or after 19 March 2020 (determined by the date we received funds);
  • students who aren’t looking for a job in the UK;
  • students sponsored or referred by their employer;
  • students who don’t have the right to work in the UK full-time for at least a year following the end of the course;
  • students who at the time of claiming the refund have received a qualifying job offer (see ‘What Is A Job Offer?’), even if this offer came after 6 months of job-hunting.

 

HOW TO CLAIM A REFUND

If you believe you qualify for the refund of the tuition fees under this job offer guarantee, please email jobguarantee@makers.tech attaching the record of your studying and job-hunting processes (see above), and we will get back to you in writing within 10 working days.

 

AMENDMENTS TO THIS JOB OFFER GUARANTEE

MA reserves the right to make reasonable changes to the terms of this job offer guarantee, in particular the requirements for the job-hunting process, from time to time without further notice, as our approach to helping our developers find jobs they love evolves.
